Concrete Stains

WHY CONSIDER OUR CONCRETE DYE STAINS FOR YOUR PROJECT?
Acrylic concrete stains are ideal for coloring just about any concrete surface. They penetrate the surface and create semi-transparent colors. Unlike the chemical process of acid stains, acrylic stains act like a dye or stain, producing a more uniform appearance. They are thin allowing them to seep into the pores of the surface they are covering. Thus, acrylic stains don’t peel or flake away like paint will. They are resistant to Ulta-Violet rays, foot and vehicular traffic, heat from vehicle tires, moisture, mildew, acids and alkalis, as well as the ravages of mother nature. They work well for both new (like our stone and tile) or existing concrete surfaces. They are especially effective on concrete with too many cosmetic defects for acid staining.

Using concrete stain is an easy way to customize and jazz up plain gray concrete. It will bring color and life to your deck, driveway, patio, lanai, porch, basement floor, etc. Stain is a perfect alternative to paint when you want something that’s not going to chip or flake. It also allows your concrete to maintain some of its natural appearance and character. You’ve probably heard of acid stain, and seen some examples of how these stains can transform the look of a concrete surface. Our stains are acrylic-based, designed for concrete, and may be more suitable and desirable for your safety, situation, taste, and the environment.

Acrylic Stains Versus Acid Stains: Our acrylic concrete stains are semi-tranlucent and create a more uniform color than an acid stain. It doesn’t react with concrete, but penetrates the pores and adheres to the concrete, acting like a dye. You have much more control over the outcome, and our stains will help mask some of the surface defects and variations. These are much easier and safer to work with than acid stains, which is a major plus for the average do-it-yourselfer. Also, our dye stains are available in more vibrant colors. If you desire a brightly colored surface that you have control over the application with, then choose our stains.

GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION: These concentrated concrete stains come in 4 oz. samples, quarts, gallons, and (Special Order) 5-gallon pails. All sizes of dye stain concentrate are mixed 1 to 4 with distilled or de-ionized water. They yield five times the concentrate size of the desired color stain.
4 oz. of concentrate yields 20 oz. of stain, and covers 35 square feet. – Shipping weight: 1 lb.
1-quart of concentrate yields 1.25 gallons and covers 300 square feet. – Shipping weight: 3 lbs.
1-gallon of concentrate yields 5 gallons and covers 1,000 square feet. – Shipping weight: 10 lbs.
5-gallons of concentrate yields 25 gallons and covers 5,000 square feet. – Shipping weight: 47 lbs.
These are water-based, extra strength stains, developed to achieve a natural appearance on concrete floors. They were formulated as a user friendly alternative to hazardous solvent and acid-based stains. They offer superior adhesion to both interior and exterior concrete, brick, stone, plaster, and terra cotta surfaces. As with all stains, the use of a sealer is recommended to extend the stain’s longevity.

GENERAL PROPERTIES:
A decorative stain for concrete surfaces. Smith’s Color Floor stain is water submersible, alkali, weather and UV light resistant. The use of a topcoat is suggested. The stain is compatible with solvent-based, water-based, single and two-component sealer products, including but not limited to urethanes, acrylics and epoxy clear sealers. Warning: They are not compatible with Methyl Methacrylate or penetrating (e.g. sodium silicate) sealers.

CLEAN UP: Immediately clean up work area and tools with water while stains are still wet. Compatible with neutralized acid-based stains. – Compatible with overlays, as a topical stain and as an integral color. – May be applied over previously sealed surface. – Low odor – Fast air-drying. – Fast delivery, NO Red Label. – Low VOC. – Interior or Exterior application.

Recommended Use: It is a user-friendly stain for concrete floors and other porous substrates. May be applied over sealed surfaces, (refer to Application Instructions).

Not Recommended For: Non-porous substrates (e.g. metal, resin, fiberglass) when submerged in water or exposed to severe weather conditions.

Thinning: The recommended dilution ratio of the stain/dye is 1 to 4 with distilled or de-ionized water. Increased transparency as well as lighter color shade can be achieved by increasing the dilution ratio (amount of water to concentrate). The dilution ratio should not surpass 1 part concentrate to 8 parts distilled, de-ionized or reverse osmosis water. Decreasing the dilution ratio (e.g. 1 part concentrate to 1 part water) will increase the hide or opacity. This allows the applicator to cover stains and blemishes as well as achieve uniformity on different surfaces. A natural variegated appearance is still achieved at lower dilution rates. Note: As dilution ratio increases, the amount of vehicle solids (glue) decreases, resulting in a less durable stain.

APPLICATION METHOD: To achieve a natural variegate or mottled appearance, stain should be applied by creating a mist via an airless sprayer, High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) sprayer, pump sprayer or trigger spray bottle (plant mister). The variegation is the result of the specific gravities of the pigments as well as the absorption rate of the application surface. Roller application methods force absorption, resulting in a more monotone or painted appearance. Application with a brush or sea sponge in areas where coverage and product control are warranted such as corners and walls, and other vertical applications, or where a sprcific pattern or design is desired.

Secondary – Highlight Color: To achieve increased color depth or mottled appearance, a secondary or highlight coat can be applied as soon as the initial color is dry to the touch, (approximately 15 minutes). Note: All Smith’s Color Floor Colors are compatible, thus can be mixed, sprayed simultaneously and layered to achieve a desired appearance. Let your imagination run wild!
